Ventia is a leading essential infrastructure services provider making infrastructure work for communities across Australia and New Zealand. An Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) top 200 company, with a secondary listing on New Zealand’s Exchange (NZX), Ventia specialise in the long-term operation, maintenance and management of critical public and private assets and infrastructure across a broad range of industry segments including defence and social infrastructure, infrastructure services, telecommunications and transport.
Ventia was awarded a contract by the Australian Department of Defence to design, install, and operate a novel PFAS soil treatment plant, which incorporated a 55 L/s PFAS water treatment plant (WTP) at RAAF Base Edinburgh. The technology was developed by Ventia to wash PFAS from soil – a process which generated a water stream containing high solids (5-10%) and high PFAS concentrations. The wash solution was treated via a WTP, and the treated water was recycled in a closed loop system.
Hydroflux worked with Ventia to deliver the WTP incorporating a series of filtration systems such as the HyPURE® media filtration, HyPURE® granulated activated carbon, HyX™ PFAS-selective ion exchange. At the completion of the project the wash solution was tested and validated and the clean water discharged to the environment in accordance with relevant approvals.
The project was audited by a contaminated Sites Auditor to ensure compliance with the relevant criteria was met.
Key components of the WTP design, installation, and maintenance included:
- Development of the concept design, general arrangement, mass and energy balance and functional specification.
- Development of a 3D model.
- Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) workshops.
- Development of Issued for Construction (IFC) drawings.
- Development of a Performance Specification.
- Construction and installation.
- Commissioning and proof-of-performance trial.
- Treatment of ~250 ML of water at 55 L/sec (~5 ML/day).
- Discharge of clean and validated treated water to a surface water body.
