Disc Filter – Micro Screening for Removal of Very Fine Solids
The HUBER RoDisc® Disc Filters, available through Hydroflux Epco, are an advanced, high-performance solution for fine screening and solids separation in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment applications. This innovative system uses multiple rotating mesh discs to provide exceptional filtration efficiency, effectively capturing fine particles while maintaining high hydraulic capacity. The system has been designed for fine screening of up to 1500 m³/h with a mesh size down to as small as 10 μm.
With its compact, modular design, this unique disc filter is ideal for retrofitting into existing plants or as part of new installations. The system delivers reliable, low-maintenance performance with minimal energy consumption, making it a sustainable and cost-effective option for wastewater treatment. Hydroflux Epco’s expertise in wastewater management ensures the RoDisc Disc Filter is tailored to meet the specific needs of each project, providing long-term operational reliability and efficiency.
Two of the Most Common Applications for the Disc Filter
End-of-Line Disc Filtration of Biologically Treated Wastewater
The HUBER RoDisc Disc Filter is commonly used for the filtration of biologically treated wastewater in both municipal and industrial applications. It effectively removes fine suspended solids, particularly when secondary clarifiers underperform due to insufficient capacity or poor sludge settling characteristics.
The RoDisc Disc Filter provides reliable, high-quality filtration, consistently delivering effluent quality that surpasses regulatory limits for filterable solids. Additionally, the system can achieve significant reductions in phosphorus concentrations, contributing to improved water quality and enhanced environmental compliance.
Upstream Disc Filtration to Protect or Increase the Efficiency of Downstream Treatment Systems
A nearly solids-free flow is essential for the efficient, reliable, and low-maintenance operation of some downstream treatment processes, such as UV disinfection or membrane filtration. The RoDisc Disc Filter effectively reduces suspended solids concentrations, ensuring optimal performance of these subsequent stages. The investment in micro screening is easily offset by the cost savings achieved through reduced maintenance, extended equipment lifespan, and improved operational efficiency in downstream systems.
Function and Operation
The HUBER RoDisc Disc Filter features up to 35 vertical discs mounted on a horizontal shaft, with approximately 65% of the disc surface submerged in the filtrate during operation. Each disc is composed of 12 plastic segments, each holding two filter plates covered with fine mesh on both sides. The mesh, thermally fixed for durability, is available in sizes as small as 10 μm, ensuring highly effective solids removal, and individual segments can be easily replaced if damaged, reducing maintenance time and costs.
The RoDisc Disc Filter operates via a gravity-flow process, with wastewater entering the horizontal shaft and passing through openings into the filter discs, flowing from the inside to the outside. As solids accumulate on the inner mesh surface, permeability decreases, causing the upstream water level to rise. An overflow weir maintains a stable water level in the tank during this process.
When the preset pressure differential is reached, the self-cleaning process is automatically activated. The discs rotate slowly while high-pressure spray bars use filtrate, rather than fresh water, to flush solids off the mesh surface. The dislodged solids are collected in a trough and discharged axially, ensuring efficient solids removal without interrupting the filtration process.
With its modular design and compact footprint, the HUBER RoDisc Disc Filter is adaptable to a wide range of site conditions, making it ideal for both new installations and retrofitting into existing infrastructure.
